Where do American Wirehairs come from?

In 1966, in a little town in Upstate New York, the first American Wirehair was born. The wirehair was a natural mutation. The kitten and his sister were bought by a Rex breeder in the same town. She built up a breeding program and by 1978 the Wirehair was accepted into competition.

What do American Wirehairs look like?

Similar to the American Shorthair, American Wirehairs are strong, muscular cats. They come in an assortment of colors. The wire coat (unlike the Rex, is from a dominant gene) is what sets the wirehair apart. It is springy, dense and coarse and it is not uncommon for the whiskers of a Wirehair to be curled as well.

American Wirehairs have been described as intelligent, affectionate, calm, reserved, wild, playful, and inquisitive cats. They are friendly towards dogs and other pets. They would make a great addition to any household.
